The Playground lets you test Thea’s answers before members ever see them. Ask questions in the dashboard — Thea uses the same retrieval, confidence gate, and moderation as Discord, but nothing is posted to a channel.
Playground runs consume real AI budget and count toward your monthly answers. They are not a free sandbox.

Accessing the Playground

Open the Thea dashboard and click Playground in the left navigation. The Playground loads with your current knowledge base and configuration already active — no separate setup is required.

What You Can Do in the Playground

Ask any question

Type a question in the multiline input at the bottom. Press Enter to send, or Shift + Enter to add a new line without sending.

Use sample questions

Select from a set of pre-loaded sample questions to quickly explore how Thea responds to common query types without typing them out manually.

Inspect per-answer diagnostics

Expand the diagnostics panel under any answer to see the passages matched, the confidence score, and the sources cited for that specific response.

Clear history

Reset the conversation at any time with the Clear button. Previous runs are preserved in the run history for comparison.

Per-Answer Diagnostics

Every answer in the Playground includes a collapsible diagnostics panel. Open it to see:
  • Passages matched — the exact text excerpts Thea retrieved, ranked by relevance.
  • Confidence score — the 0–1 score Thea assigned this draft before deciding whether to post or escalate.
  • Sources cited — the source name, type, and passage location for each citation in the answer.
Use the confidence score here to calibrate your threshold setting. If an answer you consider correct is scoring below your current threshold and triggering escalation, your threshold may be set too high for the depth of your current knowledge base.

Error Types

The Playground surfaces configuration and runtime issues as inline error messages so you can fix them before they affect real members.
Your server has reached its answer rate limit for the current window. Wait for the limit to reset or upgrade your plan for a higher limit.
The monthly answer quota for your plan has been reached. Answers will not be generated until the quota resets at the start of the next billing period, or until you upgrade.
A required setting — such as the escalation role or a knowledge source — is missing or misconfigured. The error message identifies which setting needs attention.
The question or input did not pass Thea’s input validation. This can occur with extremely long messages or inputs containing unsupported characters.
Follow this workflow every time you add or update a knowledge source to make sure Thea is ready before members start asking.
1

Add or update a source

Go to Knowledge and add your new source or trigger a re-sync. Wait until the status is Ready.
2

Open the Playground

Navigate to Playground in the dashboard.
3

Ask questions the new source should cover

Write questions a member would realistically ask about the content you just added. Be specific — broad questions may match many sources, while narrow questions stress-test whether the new passages are actually being retrieved.
4

Inspect passages matched and confidence

Open the diagnostics panel for each answer. Confirm that passages from your new source appear in the passages matched list and that the confidence score is above your threshold.
5

Adjust your threshold if needed

If well-supported answers are scoring lower than expected, consider lowering your threshold slightly. If answers are posting when they should be escalating, raise it.
Keep a document with a set of canonical test questions — one or two per major topic in your knowledge base. Re-run the full list in the Playground after every source update to catch regressions before they reach your members.
